Sometimes you can't predict what will churn through the subconscious and emerge from a textile. I started this piece in March, before my teaching tour to AU/ZN, so I didn't plan for it to be what it is... But as I was working through the stages of felting it called to be dyed, and this is unusual for me to do with a finished piece. As it came through the rinse process, I watched a transformation as longfin eels began swimming through the water. The ceramic sculptures I was so taken by at the Aratoi Museum of Art and History had found their way home with me.The exhibit, WAI - Manga Maha, Awa Kotahi | One River, Many Streams, seeks to reconnect the Wairarapa community with its waterways and to advocate for the rivers of the region. It featured a site-specific ceramic river sculpture with 80+ eels by Sam Ludden.
